Preventing Sewer Clogs: A Guide to Handling Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG)

We kindly request our residents to familiarize themselves with these straightforward steps on how to effectively manage fats, oils, and grease to ensure the health of our sewer system.

Keeping Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) Out of the Sewer System

1. Never Pour FOG Down the Drain

  • This simple action is incredibly impactful in preventing FOG from infiltrating our sewer system.
  • When fats, oils, and grease are disposed of in kitchen drains, they accumulate within sewer pipes.
  • As these substances accumulate, they constrict the flow in the pipes and can lead to untreated wastewater backup, resulting in substantial cleanup and restoration costs.
  • Thousands of dollars are spent annually on plumbing emergencies to address grease blockages and to pump out grease traps and interceptors.

Reducing Fats, Oils & Grease (FOG) in Commercial Kitchens

2. Use Covered Containers for Oil and Grease

  • Properly store oil and grease in sealed containers to prevent leakage.

3. Dispose of Food Scraps Properly

  • Remove food scraps from dishes and place them in garbage bags for appropriate disposal.
  • Avoid using food disposals/grinders to ensure that food scraps are discarded with the garbage.

4. Manage Grease from Kitchen Equipment

  • Extract oil and grease from dishes, pans, fryers, and griddles. Always allow the grease to cool before skimming or scraping off any excess.
  • Rinse dishes with cold water before loading them into the dishwasher.

5. Implement Regular Drain Maintenance

  • Install catch baskets to cover kitchen sinks and empty them into the garbage regularly.
  • Utilize fine screens to cover floor drains and ensure they are emptied into the garbage on a routine basis.

By adopting these guidelines, you are actively contributing to the health and longevity of our sewer system, reducing the likelihood of costly blockages, and promoting a more sustainable and efficient community. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
