On Wednesday, August 9th, 2023 the 50th Anniversary Committee organized a Staff/Employee Re-union as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations. At the event was Mr. Lloyd Dalton and his family. Lloyd was Deputy Mayor on both the First and Second Elected Councils for the Town following the amalgamation of Happy Valley and Goose Bay in 1973. His father, Charles Anthony Dalton, had been Chairman of the Hamilton River Settlement Road Committee on September 29, 1946 when they submitted a petition to the colonial government of Newfoundland’s, Department of Public Works requesting $1,000 for the purpose of building a road from Hamilton River Settlement to the main road of Goose Airport. Mr. Dalton graciously provided the town with the original copy of this petition that was signed by the residents of the community as well as an original list of all households showing the number of people in their family as of June 1945.
The documents, graciously donated by Mr. Dalton, also included a letter from the RCAF Commanding Officer outlining the regulations pertaining to residents at Hamilton River Settlement. The document also outlined the role of the Hamilton River Liaison Committee that would assist the RCAF with the administration of the settlement. A typed addendum on the letter in blue type outlined the committee members as being Charles A. Dalton as Chairman, Earnest Learning as Secretary, George E. Rendell as Treasurer with Fred Blake and Bert Blake as the remaining committee members.
The documents also included a map showing plots of land along Hamilton River Road as well as the names of persons who had been assigned plots.
