Town Hall About Us

About Us

Our town offers the most extensive range of commercial services in Labrador, including government support agencies, training and professional support services.

History

The community was built in 1941 and was known as the former Town of Happy Valley and Local Improvement District of Goose Bay. It wasn’t until 1973, that it was incorporated as the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The military has played an inherent role in forming the history of this region. The airfield was first constructed in 1941 as a landing and refuelling stop for the Atlantic Ferry Command; was used as an aircraft base during World War II; and then became a tactical flight training centre for many allied Air Forces such as German, British and Dutch.

Located on Canadian Forces Base 5 Wing Goose Bay, the airport is on the official NASA list of alternate Shuttle landing sites due to the quality of infrastructure and prevailing weather conditions. In 2016, the Town joined CFB 5 Wing Goose Bay in celebrating its 75th Anniversary as a part of our community.

About the Community

Rooted in history, our community’s foundations trace back to 1941 when it was established as the former Town of Happy Valley and the Local Improvement District of Goose Bay. A transformative shift occurred in 1973 when it evolved into the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, marking a significant milestone in our journey.

The echoes of our past resonate with a rich military legacy. The airfield, initially constructed in 1941 as an Atlantic Ferry Command stop, evolved into a vital World War II aircraft base. The pages of history recount its role as a pivotal tactical flight training hub for allied Air Forces, welcoming the likes of German, British, and Dutch aviators.

Nestled within Canadian Forces Base 5 Wing Goose Bay, our airport’s stature is exemplified by its inclusion on NASA’s roster of alternate Shuttle landing sites, owing to its exceptional infrastructure and climate conditions. In 2016, our community proudly commemorated CFB 5 Wing Goose Bay’s 75th Anniversary, further cementing our harmonious partnership.

Adding to our remarkable journey, 2023 marks a special milestone as we celebrate Happy Valley Goose Bay’s 50th Anniversary. This noteworthy occasion allows us to reflect on our growth, achievements, and the vibrant spirit that has defined us over the decades. As we look back with pride, we also embrace the future with renewed energy and determination, carrying our community’s legacy forward into the next chapter of our story.
