Bus Operator
The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is seeking applications from customer-focused individuals interested in providing safe, reliable public transit for residents and visitors as a Bus Operator.
Bus Operators play a vital role in our community, providing excellent customer service alongside safe and efficient transportation. Daily duties involve monitoring passengers and other drivers, requiring tact and diplomacy. Alertness is crucial given long hours, minimal breaks, and exposure to varied weather and traffic. The public transit service demands flexibility, with varied shifts covering days, evenings, splits, and weekends.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school graduation certificate or equivalent
- Valid Driver’s License Class 4 or ability to obtain within one month of application
- Safe driving record per driver’s abstract from Gov NL
- Three (3) years of recent driving experience
- Three (3) years of experience in a service occupation dealing with customers
- Proficient in the use of technology. Specific software training will be provided.
- Knowledge of the NL Highway Traffic Act
- Criminal Record Check (RCMP), Provincial Court Check, and Vulnerable Sector Check are requirements to start
- Completion of a defensive driving course is an asset
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job, such as sitting for prolonged
- periods, reaching, gripping, twisting and turning of the neck, sensory/perceptual
- demands, along with good concentration
- Be able to demonstrate dependability, reliability, and punctuality
- Have strong problem-solving skills
- Be able to react quickly and remain calm in difficult and stressful situations
- Be able to understand, speak, read, and write English to learn training materials, communicate effectively with the travelling public, and write reports
- Be able to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and split shifts
- Be able to work in all weather conditions
- Strong customer service skills – attentiveness, courteousness, communicating effectively with passengers and responding to their needs, dealing with a diverse customer base
- Demonstrate good judgement and safe driving habits
Salary of $30.85 per hour and benefits as per CUPE Local 2019 Collective Agreement with the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with modifications.
