Apprentice Mechanic (Heavy Duty Equipment Technician)

The Town of Happy Valley–Goose Bay is seeking an Apprentice Mechanic to join its Public Works team. This position offers the opportunity to develop a skilled trade while helping maintain the vehicles and equipment the Town relies on to deliver services throughout the community.

Working under the direction and supervision of a qualified journeyperson, the apprentice will gain practical experience maintaining and repairing the Town’s fleet, which may include heavy equipment, trucks, light-duty vehicles and other municipal equipment. The successful candidate will also complete the technical training and other requirements of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Heavy Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist with inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs.

• Help service mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and related systems, according to your training and level of competency.

• Prepare equipment for service, identify defects and report concerns to the supervising mechanic.

• Use tools, shop equipment and protective equipment safely; keep work areas clean and organized.

• Record work performed, parts used and apprenticeship hours, and maintain the required apprentice logbook.

• Attend required in-class training and work toward each apprenticeship milestone.

• Perform other related duties within the scope of your training, under appropriate supervision.

Qualifications:

Education, Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Completion of a recognized Heavy Duty Equipment Technician pre-employment program, or equivalent training that makes you eligible to register in the Newfoundland and Labrador apprenticeship program.

• A genuine interest in completing the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician apprenticeship and obtaining journeyperson certification.

• Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, safe work practices and the use of hand and power tools.

• The ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team and communicate clearly about equipment and safety concerns.

• A valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 5 driver’s licence and an acceptable driver’s abstract.

• Be able to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, statutory holidays, and split shifts

• Be able to work in all weather conditions

his is a full-time apprenticeship position. The successful candidate will work with a qualified journeyperson and will be expected to maintain registration, attend required technical training and make satisfactory progress through the provincial apprenticeship program. Completion of the apprenticeship does not, by itself, guarantee appointment to a permanent position.
