Information For the Public
Release Date: March 13, 2026
The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay welcomes yesterday’s announcement by Prime Minister Mark Carney outlining more than $40 billion in new federal investments to strengthen Canada’s Arctic and Northern regions. The plan includes major commitments to Deployed Operating Base 5 Wing Goose Bay, reaffirming Labrador’s essential role in Canada’s Northern and Arctic security.
Significant upgrades to 5 Wing’s airfields, hangars, fuel and ammunition storage, accommodations, and support facilities are expected to create jobs, expand local contracting opportunities, and strengthen the region’s vital role in supporting Canada’s Arctic capabilities.
“This is a historic announcement for Happy Valley–Goose Bay,” said Mayor Bert Pomeroy. “The federal government’s commitment to strengthening 5 Wing Goose Bay recognizes what we have always known – that our community plays a vital role in Canada’s Northern and Arctic security. These investments will bring jobs, stability, and new opportunities for our community and region. The Town is committed to ensuring that this growth is sustainable and that our community is fully supported as we prepare for the future.”
The Town will continue working to ensure the community is ready for increased activity at 5 Wing, including advocating for housing, municipal infrastructure, workforce development, and support for local businesses, as well as the social supports needed to help residents manage the impacts of rapid growth. As Canada expands its presence in the Arctic, Happy Valley–Goose Bay is positioned to play an even greater role in national defence, logistics, and Northern development.
